Most career runs before being dismissed stumped in Test cricket

Getting out caught by fielders and wicketkeepers, bowled and run-outs are common types of dismissals for a batter in cricket. However, being dismissed stumped is a slightly rare form of dismissal compared to the one mentioned. In the ultimate format of the game, there have been a few top-notch cricketers who knew how to hold their ground and evaded being stumped. Even as they caught up with time, it did not happen before they scored tons of runs for their team.

Let’s take a look at the players with the most career runs before being dismissed stumped in the history of Test cricket:

3. Graeme Smith

Former South Africa skipper Graeme Smith made his maiden appearance in the whites against Australia in Cape Town in 2002. The Proteas got dismissed stumped only once in his entire Test career and that occasion came after amassing 8800 runs in the format. Smith got stumped by wicketkeeper Adnan Akmal off Saeed Ajmal against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi in 2013. Smith racked up 9265 runs at an average of 48.25 with 27 centuries and 38 fifties in 117 matches.

2. Joe Root

England’s Joe Root is the second name on this chart. The classy right-handed batter got dismissed stumped for the first time ever in his Test career in the recently concluded opening Ashes Test at Edgbaston in Birmingham. In the second innings, Root suffered the unfortunate dismissal after 11168 Test runs as wicketkeeper Alex Carey dislodged the bails off the bowling of spinner Nathan Lyon. Root, who made his maiden Test appearance against India in Nagpur in 2012, has struck 11,168 runs in 131 matches at an average of 50.76 with 30 centuries and 58 half-centuries.

1. Shivnarine Chanderpaul

Former West Indies legend Shivnarine Chanderpaul is right at the top. Known for his unorthodox style of batting, the left-hander batter got out stumped for the first time after mustering 11,414 runs in the longest format of the game. The incident took place against New Zealand at Bridgetown in Barbados in 2014. In the second innings of the third Test, Chanderpaul got dismissed stumped by wicketkeeper BJ Watling off the bowling of spinner Mark Craig. The legendary player made his Test debut against England in Georgetown in 1994. In 164 games, he racked up 11,867 runs at an average of 51.37 with 30 tons and 66 fifties, and two stumping dismissals.
