Most dismissals by a wicketkeeper in a single IPL match

Over 700 matches across 12 editions of the Indian Premier League (IPL) have taken place thus far but only one wicketkeeper has managed to affect as many as five dismissals in a match. It was Kumar Sangakkara back in 2011 edition where he claimed five catches in a match. The Sri Lankan was keeper-captain of Deccan Chargers during the match against RCB where he set an IPL record. The match was marked to be the first-ever win of the Deccan Chargers at their home ground in Hyderabad.

An interesting fact about Sangakkara’s feat was all the catches he took were off different bowlers. Chargers used five bowlers in that match and all of them picked up at least one wicket which came via Sangakkara completing the catch. The feat of claiming four or more catches as a keeper in IPL is quite rare as it has occurred only six times. The first of them was by Morne van Wyk for KKR in the 2009 edition also against RCB. Parthiv Patel and Naman Ojha are the only Indian keepers with this feat which both achieved in 2016 only.

The most number of catches by a keeper in an IPL match stands at five but the number of most stumpings is only three which has been recorded in four instances. The first two were achieved by MS Dhoni in 2010 and 2011 respectively at the Chepauk Stadium against KKR. Robin Uthappa in 2017 and Heinrich Klaasen in 2018 are the other players to effect three stumpings in an IPL match. The first-ever instance of a wicketkeeper making as many as four dismissals in an IPL match came in the inaugural edition only.

Yogesh Takawale, the keeper of Mumbai Indians, took three catches and effected a stumping in the match against Rajasthan Royals. There are as many as 15 instances of four or more dismissals by a keeper in an IPL match so far but only Dinesh Karthik and Wriddhiman Saha have done it more than once. Karthik’s both instances came against Rajasthan Royals but in 2009 for DD and in 2018 for KKR respectively.
