2. AB de Villiers, T. Dilshan, and Shahid Afridi (four times)

Former South Africa skipper AB de Villiers, Shahid Afridi, and Dilshan have won the prized player of the match award four times. All three of them were match-winners for their side during their cricketing days. De Villiers played his last T20 World Cup in 2016 and performed extremely well for the Proteas, but he alone could not win the title for his team. 

Talking about Afridi, the veteran cricketer played a crucial role for his team during the 2009 T20 World Cup. Afridi proved to be more than handy in crunch situations and got his team over the line. Just like Afridi, Dilshan also played a crucial role in his team’s success in the 2014 T20 World Cup as they defeated India in the final match.

1. Mahela Jayawardene, Chris Gayle, Shane Watson, and Virat Kohli (Five times)

Former Sri Lanka skipper Mahela Jayawardene has won five Player of the Match awards in his T20 World Cup career. His last player of the match award came during the 2012 T20 World Cup. Universe Boss Chris Gayle has also won five POTM awards as he received his last award during the 2016 T20 World Cup against England after smashing a century at the Wankhede Stadium.

The next two batters on the list are Shane Watson and Virat Kohli after winning the award five times. However, Kohli can take first place after giving some performances with the bat in the upcoming main round of the tournament in 2022.
