Most runs scored in Super Over in international cricket

The T20 format has revolutionised cricket immensely as it has brought several changes to the game. Earlier, a tie was considered the end result of a game, however, since the introduction of T20Is, super overs are used as a tiebreaker. After the two teams get tied on the score in their allotted overs, a one-over game is played where each team has just two wickets in hand and needs to outscore their opposition to win the match.

Over the years, international cricket has witnessed several entertaining super overs as fans have been left enthralled with sheer entertainment. On that note, let’s take a look at the top three instances when most runs were scored in a super over:

20 by India vs New Zealand, 3rd T20I, Hamilton, 29 January, 2020

The two teams got tied in a thrilling manner on 179 in their allotted 20 overs. In the super over, Martin Guptill and Kane Williamson managed to score 17 against Bumrah. In reply, India needed 10 to win off the last two balls with Rohit Sharma on strike. The opening batter smacked back-to-back sixes against Tim Southee to get 20 off the over and helped his side get over the line.

25/1 by West Indies vs New Zealand, 1st T20I, Auckland, December 26,2008; 25 by West Indies women’s vs South Africa Women’s, 2nd ODI, Johannesburg, 31 January 2022

After West Indies and New Zealand got tied on 155 in their allotted 20 overs, a super over came into play to decide the winner. New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori took responsibility in his hands with the ball. However, the decision didn’t prove to be right as he was hammered by Chris Gayle for 25. In reply, New Zealand could only manage to score 15 with both batters getting out within four balls.

West Indies Women and South Africa Women got tied on 160 with both teams failing to play their complete 50 overs. Shabnim Ismail came on to bowl for South Africa and was ripped apart for 25 runs by Hayley Matthews and Deandra Dottin. In reply, Matthews successfully defended the target against Chloe Tyron and Tazmin Brits as Proteas women could only score 17/1 in their super over.

30 by Netherlands vs West Indies, 18th Match, ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2023, Harare

The match turned out to be a high-scoring affair as both teams got tied on 374 in their allotted 50 overs. In the super over, Logan Van Beek ripped apart Jason Holder and smacked him for 30 runs. He further defended the score dismissing both batters in just 5 balls while giving eight runs away. As a result, the Netherlands handed a heavy defeat to West Indies and dented their campaign.
