Most sixes against a team in Test cricket

Test Cricket is considered a game of patience where the batter who is able to break down the bowler succeeds. While there are some batters who play the game of time to tire down the bowlers, some just hit them mercilessly all around the ground to shatter their confidence. Over the years, Test cricket has witnessed some of the fiercest hitters of the cricket ball who love to clear the fence even in the longest format making full use of the attacking fields. On that note, let’s take a look at the top three players who have the most sixes against a team in Test cricket:

3. Ben Stokes (30 Sixes) vs South Africa in 15 matches

England captain Ben Stokes takes the third spot on the list, having 30 sixes to his name against South Africa. The all-rounder smacked 11 of these during his breathtaking knock of 258 (198) at Cape Town during the second Test in January 2016.

2. Viv Richards (34 sixes) vs England in 36 matches

Touted as the greatest batter of his era, Sir Viv Richards unleashed his beast mode on the opposition more often than not. However, it was England who faced his six-hitting prowess the most as he clobbered 34 maximums against them. Seven out of those came during his stupendous knock of 110* off 58 balls in St. Johns during the fifth Test in April 1986. Notably, the knock stood as the fastest hundred in Test cricket (56 balls) until surpassed by Brendon McCullum (54 balls) in February 2016. Richards has a massive 84 sixes in his career and ranks ninth on the list of most sixes hit in a career.

1. Ben Stokes (39 sixes) vs Australia in 24 matches

Stokes once again appears on the list on the top spot having smacked 39 sixes against Australia in 24 games. Nine of those came during his sensational 155 (214) during the second Test of the recently concluded Ashes 2023 at Lord’s. He also smacked eight sixes during his miraculous Headingley innings of 135* during the third Test of the Ashes 2019. Stokes also ranks on the top spot in the list of most sixes hit by a player in his Test career with 124 sixes to his name from 97 matches.
