Mumbai selects U-19 talent Atharva Ankolekar for Vijay Hazare Trophy

In the recently concluded Under-19 Asia Cup final in Sri Lanka, 18-year old Atharva Ankolekar took 5/28 against Bangladesh. His effort proved essential in India winning the title. The young boy has now climbed another upward step in domestic cricket. Mumbai Cricket Association have selected the left-arm spinner in their 17-man squad for the Vijay Hazare Trophy.

Defending only 106 runs, the India Under-19 team kept their calm and skittled the opposition with five runs short. Ankolekar not only dismissed half the side but also picked the last two wickets swiftly to wrap up the game. He enjoyed a hero’s welcome back home and now if he will be rubbing shoulders with the senior team.

The Vijay Hazare Trophy 2019-20 begins on 24th September. Mumbai are the defending champions of the ODD competition. They will be playing their group matches at Bengaluru. Other two notable inclusions in the squad are Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sarfaraz Khan. Khan had earlier played for Uttar Pradesh and had to serve a cooling period to qualify for Mumbai. Shreyas Iyer will be leading the city’s side. Former Mumbai wicketkeeper Vinayak Samant shall be coaching the team.
