Narayan Jagadeesan breaks a flurry of records during Vijay Hazare Trophy game

Tamil Nadu batter Narayan Jagadeesan, who had already smashed four consecutive centuries in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy (VHT), created a new world record as he became the first-ever player to hit five hundred on the bounce in List A cricket. With a score of 277, he also registered the highest individual score in List A cricket. The right-handed batter achieved the feat against Arunachal Pradesh in the sixth round of the Elite Group C match on November 21 at the M Chinnaswamy stadium.

Jagadeesan surpassed Sri Lanka legend Kumar Sangakkara, South Africa’s Alviro Petersen, and Karnataka player Devdutt Padikkal, all of whom have four centuries on the trot in the history of List A cricket. The 26-year-old also went past Virat Kohli, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Prithvi Shaw, and Padikkal to hit the most number of centuries in a single edition of the VHT. Kohli had struck four tons in the 2008/09 season while Gaikwad did it in 2021/22 and Shaw and Padikkal both in 2020/21.

Jagadeesan, who was one of the few players to be released by Chennai Super Kings ahead of the mini-auction in December, has racked up a mammoth 799 runs in six innings at a staggering average of 159.80 in the current VHT campaign. Talking about the above-mentioned Arunachal Pradesh clash, Jagadeesan ended up with 277 off 141 with 25 fours and 15 maximums, as he broke another world record of the highest individual score in List A matches. He edged past Ali Brown’s knock of 268 which came 20 years back for Surrey against Glamorgan in 2002.

Narayan also shared a massive 416-opening stand with Sai Sudharsan, who hammered 154 off 102 which included 19 fours and two sixes against Arunachal Pradesh. The duo also broke the record of the highest partnership for the opening wicket of 367* by Morne van Wyk and Cameron Delport for Dolphins against Knights in the Momentum One Day Cup in 2014. Jagadeesan, who has played seven IPL matches for CSK, will be one of the most sought-after players in the upcoming mini-auction for the 2023 edition as franchises will be keeping an eye on him after his purple patch in VHT.
