BCCI yet to discuss Rahul Dravid’s future as India head coach

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has not yet commenced discussions on the future of Rahul Dravid as the head coach of Team India. The tenure of Dravid and his support staff would have concluded had India lost the semi-final against New Zealand at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on November 15.

However, India emerged victorious against the Kane Williamson-led side by 70 runs, securing their first win over the Kiwis in a knockout match and securing a spot in the final for the fourth time. The Men in Blue are set to face either South Africa or Australia in the final on November 19 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

According to reports from Cricbuzz, Dravid and his support staff had contracts until the World Cup, and opinions within the BCCI varied regarding their future. Initially, there were qualms in Dravid’s coaching style, but the recent exceptional performances of the Indian team may have changed their insights.

With India having a dream run in the World Cup, there is speculation about a possible contract renewal or extension of Dravid. However, it remains uncertain whether he himself is interested in continuing as the coach.

The former Indian cricketer assumed the role of head coach in 2021 with good impression at the initial stages. However, there were speculations that he might voluntarily step down after the World Cup, regardless of the team’s performance. However, the 50-year-old’s current stance on a potential extension is unknown.

Whether or not the former Indian captain decides to continue, there is an expectation that members of his support staff, including batting coach Vikram Rathour, bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, and fielding coach T Dilip might be suggested to extend their contracts. Meanwhile, reports suggest that coaches from the National Cricket Academy (NCA) under VVS Laxman may take charge of the Indian team which will play the Twenty20 series against Australia after the Cricket World Cup, with Dravid being rested.
