Marcus Stoinis retires from ODI cricket

Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis has announced his immediate retirement from One Day International (ODI) cricket, opting to focus solely on the T20 format. This decision comes just before the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy, for which he was initially selected.
Stoinis, 35, made his ODI debut in 2015 and has since represented Australia in 74 matches. Throughout his ODI career, he scored 1,495 runs at an average of 26.69 and claimed 48 wickets with an average of 43.12. Notably, he was part of Australia’s 2023 World Cup-winning squad.
In a statement, Stoinis expressed gratitude for his ODI journey, stating, “Playing ODI cricket for Australia has been an incredible honor, and I’m thankful for the support from my teammates, coaches, and fans throughout this journey.” He emphasized his desire to concentrate on T20 cricket moving forward.
Australian coach Andrew McDonald lauded Stoinis’s contributions, highlighting his leadership and his pivotal role in the team’s successes over the past decade. McDonald remarked, “Marcus has been a significant part of our ODI setup, and his presence will be missed. We respect his decision and wish him the best in his T20 endeavors.”
Stoinis’s retirement adds to Australia’s selection challenges ahead of the Champions Trophy, especially with Mitchell Marsh, who was also ruled out due to injury. The national selectors are now tasked with identifying suitable replacements to ensure the team’s competitiveness in the tournament.
