MI vs CSK Review: Pathirana’s brilliance outshines Rohit’s ton as Mumbai go down vs Chennai

Mumbai Indians played host to Chennai Super Kings in Match 29 of the Indian Premier League 2024 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday. MI won the toss and opted to bowl first. Rachin Ravindra (21 off 16) and Ajinkya Rahane (5 off 8) as an opening pair faltered. Ruturaj Gaikwad (69 off 40) and Shivam Dube (66* off 38) got CSK going in the game. Daryl Mitchell (17 off 14) struggled to score boundaries and MS Dhoni’s (20* off 4) last-over heroics took CSK’s total to 206/4.

For MI, Rohit Sharma (105* off 63) and Ishan Kishan (23 off 15) were off to a great start. Suryakumar Yadav departed without scoring. Tilak Verma (31 off 20) played an important knock in the middle. Hardik Pandya (2 off 6) could not fetch substantial runs. Tim David (13 off 5) and Romario Shepherd (1 off 2) could not help MI down the order. CSK thumped MI by 20 runs as Rohit’s century went in vain. Notably, it was only his second in the IPL, after the first one in 2012.

Top Performers of the Match

MS Dhoni (20* off 4)

Looking at how the game traversed, it was Dhoni’s innings that made a difference at the end. Those 20 runs acted as a reserve fuel for CSK. He hit Hardik Pandya for three consecutive sixes and took CSK’s total to 206 in no time from 186. His strike rate column read 500 at the end of his knock.

Matheesha Pathirana (4 for 28)

Matheesha Pathirana came and straightaway broke the 70-run opening stand by picking Ishan Kishan. He later sent Suryakumar Yadav packing in the same over. Tilak Verma fell prey to his slower one and he cleaned up Romario Shepherd with a yorker.

What’s next for both teams?
