Sachin Tendulkar unveils memorial of his coach Dronacharya Ramakant Achrekar Sir at Shivaji Park

The Master Blaster on Tuesday, 03rd December 2024, unveiled a memorial of his coach, Dronacharya Ramakant Achrekar, at Mumbai’s Shivaji Park, a venue deeply associated with Indian cricket’s grassroots development. The tribute honors Achrekar’s significant contributions to shaping cricketing talent, including Tendulkar himself. The memorial features symbolic cricket stumps, a bat, a ball, and Achrekar’s iconic tweed cap, reflecting his legacy of dedication to the sport.

During the event, Tendulkar shared heartfelt memories of Achrekar Sir’s influence, recalling his strict yet nurturing coaching methods. He highlighted the innovative ways Achrekar taught cricket, such as placing coins on stumps to instill concentration, which left a lasting impression on his students. Tendulkar also emphasized Achrekar’s humility and passion, often inviting his protégés to his home, where they shared meals and stories, creating lifelong bonds​.

Recounting some fond memories with his coach and mentor, Tendulkar recounted how he and other young cricketers used to visit Achraker’s home on special occasions including Guru Purnima Day to seek his blessings.

“Not only did we visit Achrekar on Guru Purnima Day, but many times he invited us to his home… We would chat and then his wife, whom we all used to call ‘Mummy’ would prepare our favourite mutton curry and paav (loaf bread). Achrekar Sir would sit on a chair beside us and we would sit on the floor and eat,” said Tendulkar, his eyes twinkling with those old cherished moments.

The unveiling also celebrated Achrekar’s broader impact on Indian cricket, having coached players like Vinod Kambli, Balwinder Singh Sandhu, and Sanjay Bangar. This memorial acknowledges Achrekar’s enduring role in nurturing discipline, respect, and a love for the game among young players​.

Tendulkar expressed gratitude for this recognition, stating it fulfills Achrekar’s dream of being a part of Shivaji Park forever. This tribute not only preserves the memory of a legendary coach but also inspires future generations to value hard work and dedication in sports.
