Shakib is fit to play in the opening match of the World Cup

Bangladesh can breathe a sigh of relief as star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan is set to play their opening match in the ODI World Cup against Afghanistan on October 7 as confirmed by Najmul Hossain Shanto, the stand-in captain for the warm-up match against England.

Speculation had arisen around Shakib’s availability after he sustained a foot injury during a football session in the lead-up to Bangladesh’s warm-up game against Sri Lanka on September 29. Consequently, Shakib opted out of that match, where Bangladesh secured victory with Mehidy Hasan Miraz leading the charge.

Shakib Al Hasan is “100% fine” and “will be available” for Bangladesh’s first match of the ODI World Cup against Afghanistan on October 7 in Dharamsala, Shanto was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

Shanto’s recent update is indeed a cause for celebration for Bangladesh supporters, given that Shakib holds the key to the team’s success in the World Cup. His all-around prowess and consistency makes him an invaluable asset, particularly in light of Bangladesh’s lackluster performance in the lead-up to the tournament.

Bangladesh’s recent track record has not been without challenges. They failed to progress beyond the Super Four stage at the Asia Cup earlier this month, but they managed to finish on a high note with a victory over India. Subsequently, they faced New Zealand in a three-match series at home, experimenting with their lineup, which ultimately resulted in a 2-0 series loss.

Shakib’s contribution was pivotal during the Asia Cup, where he scored 80 runs in 85 balls and also claimed the crucial wicket of Suryakumar Yadav against India. His return to the squad is bound to inject confidence and much-needed experience into the team.

As the fans eagerly anticipate the ODI World Cup, Shakib’s availability is a ray of hope for Bangladesh and their supporters as they will be expecting the Tigers to deliver a good performance on the grand stage.
