On this day in 2018: Zimbabwe’s first away Test win in 17 years

Zimbabwe has been a side that has struggled constantly to put up performances in away conditions and despite getting the Test playing status, they weren’t in their groove since the start of the 20th century. However, after 17 years, the fans had a great moment to cherish when Zimbabwe won their first-ever away Test in 2018 against Bangladesh in Sylhet on this day (November 6).

The visitors elected to bat first after winning the toss and skipper Hamilton Masakadza scored a half-century to set up a good platform at the top. Sean William’s 88-run knock alongside Peter Moor’s unbeaten 63 ensured that Zimbabwe finished with 282 in the first innings. For Bangladesh, Taijul Islam stepped up with a six-wicket haul.

In the second innings, Bangladesh were bundled up for 143 on account of fantastic bowling spell from Kyle Jarvis and Tendai Chatara. Sikandar Raza picked up three wickets as Ariful Haque’s unbeaten 41 proved to be the top score for the hosts.

With a lead of 141 runs, Zimbabwe entered the third innings and their skipper Masakadza yet again played a handy knock of 48 at the top. Most of the batters got starts but were dismissed in their 20’s as Zimbabwe ended up with 181 in 65.4 overs. Taijul was the star in the bowling department again as he picked up a five-wicket haul and Bangladesh needed 321 to win the Test.

In the final innings, Bangladesh lost their way after a good start to the innings and Imrul Kayes’ 43 was the only decisive knock. Brandon Mavuta and Sikandar Raza combinedly picked up seven wickets in the innings as Bangladesh suffered a painful defeat at the hands of Zimbabwe. Williams picked up the player of the match award for his first innings knock and picking up a wicket as well.
