On this day in 2020: Hasaranga’s whirlwind knock helps Sri Lanka achieve record chase

On this day i.e. 22nd February in 2020, Sri Lanka registered a memorable victory against West Indies in an ODI match. In this game, Sri Lankan captain Dimuth Karunaratne won the toss and decided to bowl first. The West Indian team lost their opener Sunil Ambris very early at the score of 10. After this, Shai Hope and Darren Bravo added 77 runs for the second wicket. Darren Bravo got run out after scoring 39 runs off 52 balls with the help of 3 fours and 2 sixes.

Opener Shai Hope kept scoring runs from one end for the West Indies team. He smashed a wonderful century in this game. Hope played a brilliant knock of 115 runs off 140 balls including 10 fours. Apart from Hope, all-rounder, Roston Chase hit 41 runs off 45 balls with the help of 3 fours and 1 six. In the end, Keemo Paul and Hayden Walsh added 49 runs off only 20 balls for the 8th wicket. Paul hit 32 runs off 17 balls including 4 fours and 1 six to lead the West Indies to a score of 289/7 in 50 overs.

In the chase, Sri Lanka had a great start with openers Avishka Fernando and Dimuth Karunaratne putting together a century partnership. Both of them got out after scoring their half-centuries. For Sri Lanka, the players in the middle order got good starts but were unable to convert it.

Sri Lankan team had lost 8 wickets for 262 runs in 45.3 overs, and at this stage, it seemed tough for them to win. However, Wanindu Hasaranga played a glorious knock of 42 runs off 39 balls to ensure victory for his team. Sri Lanka won the match by chasing 290 runs 49.1 overs after losing 9 wickets. This is the highest ever successful chase in SSC Colombo. Wanindu Hasaranga was awarded player of the match for his match-winning knock.
