On this day in 2021: Rahul Chahar’s 4-wicket haul help MI beat KKR

In the 5th game between Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders in 2021, Rahul Chahar bowled an amazing spell that helped his side defend a paltry score of 152 by 10 runs at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on this day.

Mumbai were put into bat first by Eoin Morgan and Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav’s partnership of 76 for the second wicket provided the impetus for a big score to be posted.

However, Mumbai lost too many wickets in the middle overs with Andre Russell running through the batting line up with a five-wicket haul. Pat Cummins picked up 2 for 24 as well and it meant that Mumbai fell short by 10-15 runs at least with the start they had.

In reply, Kolkata Knight Riders were off to an excellent start with 72 runs for the first wicket until Chahar came into the bowling attack. The leg spinner first removed Shubman Gill and immediately picked up Rahul Tripathi as well. In his third over, Chahar got the opponent’s skipper Eoin Morgan cheaply and in his final over, Chahar dismissed Nitish Rana who was taking the game away from KKR to leave them at 122 for 4 in 15 overs.

Once the top four batters were gone, the momentum shifted in the favour of Mumbai Indians and Trent Boult managed to remove the dangerous duo of Andre Russell and Pat Cummins in the final over to win the game for his side. Chahar had to be given a lot of credit for changing the game on its head and dented the run chase for the KKR side.

The 22-year-old finished his spell with 4 for 27 but wasn’t retained by Mumbai ahead of the mega auction and is currently plying his trade for the Punjab Kings.
