Only batters to be stumped on 99 in ODIs

No matter how many runs a batter may have scored in their career, getting dismissed for a score of 99 is painful. The list of batters who got dismissed for the unfortunate score goes a long way, but there are only two players who got dismissed via stumping just short of the 100-run mark.

David Warner – 99 against Sri Lanka, 2022

David Warner is renowned for his gritty innings for the Men in Yellow and he was looking in his elements against Sri Lanka in the fourth ODI against Sri Lanka. Australia needed to chase down Sri Lanka’s score of 258 runs to draw level in the five-match series. The Aussies suffered an early blow as skipper Aaron Finch was dismissed without opening his account. But Warner anchored the innings by stitching crucial partnerships with Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head. Australia were looking well on course to chase the title as the southpaw was finding boundaries at regular intervals for the visitors. But in the 38th over, Warner lost his balance against spinner Dhananjaya de Silva and was stumped by Sri Lanka’s Niroshan Dickwella on 99. Warner’s dismissal proved to be the killer blow as Australia failed in their pursuit by four runs, and Sri Lanka won the series.

VVS Laxman against West Indies, 2002

VVS Laxman against West Indies, 2002VVS Laxman was one of the most elegant Indian players when on song. The middle-order batter was known for his patience, but he was quite fluent in the ODIs as well. India hosted West Indies in the second ODI at Nagpur. The West Indies won the toss and elected to bowl first. The Indian innings struggled for momentum with wickets at regular intervals, but skipper Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman steadied the ship for the hosts with a 128-run stand for the third wicket. Laxman continued on his merry way even after the dismissal of Ganguly and was set to score a century before part-time spinner Chris Gayle had the stylish batter stumped on 99 by Ridley Jacobs. India suffered massively after Laxman’s wicket as they managed to add just 19 runs after his dismissal.
