Ricky Ponting suggests best of three format for WTC Final

Legendary former Australian captain Ricky Ponting has opined that a “Best of Three Final” format to determine the winner of the World Test Championship might not be an ideal one. The head coach of Delhi Capitals believes that the ‘Best of Three Final’ format could work well to get to the winner of a T20 competition.

Ponting has done well for Capitals over the years and it has reflected in the way Capitals have played in the last few seasons. However, the ongoing season has not been something to reflect upon fondly for Capitals as they are currently languishing at the bottom of the IPL 2023 Points Table.

Ponting appeared in an event recently and was asked a very intriguing question as to whether the World Test Championship final should be a one-off game or a ‘Best of Three affair’. Responding to the same, Ponting said, “That’s a very good question. I actually haven’t thought about that before. I have thought about having the best of three finals in T20 cricket. That’s what I have thought, because I think with the T20 game and even an IPL or the Big Bash that obviously happens in Australia. I’ve always felt that to get a fairer reflection of the best team through a tournament may be a three game final series, might be the best way to do it”.

He was further asked whether it should be the way to go forward for IPL or Big Bash or for any T20 competition. Ponting, who is himself a three-times World Cup winner expressed his views on the same and also mentioned how the mechanism should be to determine the winner of a World Cup.

“But World Cups are not like that. World Cups are about here and now, in the moment it would be like having an Olympic 100-metre sprint final when you do it three times,” Ponting concluded.
