Sachin Tendulkar urges ICC to take a call against ‘Umpire’s Call’

The bat and ball game has its own complexities. The addition of umpire’s call still baffles many of the hardcore cricket fans. Cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar appealed ICC in the latest video interaction to rule out the concept of umpire’s call. According to the current practice, a decision stays with the field umpire if a certain percentage of the ball is missing or hitting the pads or the stumps.

“What per cent of the ball hits the stumps doesn’t matter, if DRS shows us that the ball is hitting the stumps, it should be given out, regardless of the on-field call,” Tendulkar said.

The Indian batting maestro was previewing the England-West Indies Test series with batting wizard Brian Lara. The ICC has allowed three reviews per innings in this series, rather than the usual two. This is to adjust the presence of local umpire in the times of coronavirus spread.

Tendulkar provided further justification for his proposal. “The only reason they (the batsman or the bowler) have gone upstairs is that they are unhappy with the on-field decision, so when the decision goes to the third umpire, let the technology take over, just like in tennis, it’s either in or out, there’s nothing in between,” he said.

Master Blaster’s take on this DRS issue has sparked renewed conversations in the cricketing fraternity. Many cricketers have supported the move and have spoken in the same vein.
