Sherfane Rutherford: The man who won two prestigiuos T20 tournaments within a week

The inception of T20 leagues has made the cricketing calendar very busy. It has become a task for the organisers to schedule even the international calendar with, at times, players being unavailable either for their country or club. Moreover, even the COVID-19 outbreak made things tough for everyone as no cricket was played for almost four months and that led to the tournaments getting piled up.

The much-awaited 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) was played from September 19 to November 10 in the UAE. On the other hand, the PCB also decided to conclude their fifth edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL). The tournament was abruptly called off in March due to fast-rising cases of COVID in Pakistan and across the world.

Accordingly, some players who were part of both the competitions, had to travel straight to Pakistan soon after the IPL ended. Sherfane Rutherford was one such player who had to move from one bubble to another to play in the PSL. He was part of the Mumbai Indians squad who won their fifth title. Interestingly, after lifting the trophy in IPL, he had won yet another T20 League within a week thanks to Karachi Kings.

Rutherford didn’t play even a single game in MI’s winning campaign and also couldn’t do much with the bat in PSL playoffs. He scored 1 and 0 in the first qualifier and the final respectively but was lucky enough to be on the winning side in both the tournaments.

It was a unique incident as some players strive hard for their whole career to win even a single trophy. But Sherfane Rutherford ended up winning two of them and that too in a span of just seven days.
