SL vs IND: Shreevats Goswami slams Indian commentator for indirectly calling Bhuvneshwar Kumar ‘old’

Veteran Indian pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar wasn’t really at his prime during the first ODI against Sri Lanka at the R.Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. The right-arm fast bowler didn’t get a lot of purchase from the track as the Lankan batters took him for cleaners. In nine overs, Bhuvneshwar conceded as many as 63 runs without getting a single wicket. Although the 31-year-old didn’t enjoy a great day with the ball, he impressed with his fielding skills.

During the 25th over of the Sri Lankan innings, Bhuvneshwar moved towards his left and took a brilliant diving catch to dismiss the dangerous Dhananjaya de Silva. While talking about the catch, the on-air commentator mentioned that one normally sees younger players fielding at long-on and long-off, where Kumar took that catch.

Indian cricketer Shreevats Goswami wasn’t amused with such remarks as he hit back at the commentator. The southpaw asserted that tagging a player young or old based on their age is insulting. The commentator who happens to be involved in this controversy is none other than Murali Kartik.

Fitness has indeed become a necessity to survive in modern-day cricket. However, the last few years haven’t been great for Bhuvneshwar in this department as he missed several important fixtures due to injuries. Nevertheless, he still seems to be in a good shape and would be determined to serve Indian cricket for quite a while.

Speaking of how the first ODI panned out, Sri Lanka, despite having a depleted line-up managed to post 262/9 while batting first in Colombo. However, the target wasn’t anywhere near this fearless Indian batting line-up.

Youngsters Prithvi Shaw and Ishan Kishan made a mockery of Sri Lankan bowlers and cleared the ropes for fun. Skipper Shikhar Dhawan also scored an unbeaten half-century as India crossed the line in just 36.4 overs. The Men in Blue are now 1-0 up in the three-match series.
