Sophie Molineux takes a break from cricket due to mental health issues

21-year old all-rounder Sophie Molineux has become the latest Australian cricketer to take a break due to mental health issues. Molineux will step away from the ongoing WBBL and fill not play Melbourne Renegades’ fixture against Melbourne Stars. She follows the footsteps of Glenn Maxwell, Nic Maddinson and Will Pucovski to take time off from the game. The issue of mental health has become a big talking point in Australian cricket. Another high-profile cricketer taking a break will only intensify the discussion.

Australia Women’s team doctor Pip Inge confirming the news claiming that the well-being of the players was a priority for them. He also stated that she would be given all the support she required:

“Sophie has made the decision to take a break from cricket and we are providing her with the support she needs. The welfare of our players is a priority and we are proud of the brave decision by Sophie to step away from the game.”

Tim Coyle, coach of Melbourne Renegades also threw his wholehearted support behind Molineux:

“Sophie knows her teammates and the Renegades coaches and support staff are always there for her. We’ll give Sophie the time, space and any support she needs.”

Molineux has represented the Australian women’s team in 1 Test match, 3 ODIs and 17 T20Is. She will be replaced in the Renegades squad by Makinley Blows.
