Sri Lanka Cricket suspend Shehan Madushanka after drug possession charges

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) have Shehan Madushanka from all forms of international cricket. The fast bowler was taken in custody by the police for alleged possession of drugs on Monday (25th May). The 25-year old bowler was reported to have been carrying over two grams of heroin when his car was stopped in the town of Pannala by the police.

“Sri Lanka Cricket decided to suspend Shehan Madushanka from all forms of cricket, with immediate effect. The decision was taken following the player was arrested by the Police and later sent on remand custody for alleged possession of illegal drugs. The decision to suspend will remain intact until a full inquiry is conducted by the SLC into the matter,” SLC said in a release.

Madushanka shot into prominence when he registered a hat-trick on his ODI debut against Bangladesh in January 2018. Strangely, it remains his only appearance in the national ODI team. He featured in two more T20Is but has not been a part of the side since then.

The cricketer will now spend 14 days in remand before he is produced before the High Court. Sri Lanka Cricket is expected to make an official comment shortly.
