Sri Lanka to part ways with director of cricket Tom Moody
It has been reported that former Australia all-rounder Tom Moody is all set to relinquish his post as Sri Lanka’s director of cricket ahead of the T20 World Cup 2022 next month in Australia. According to reports, his contract has been terminated by a mutual agreement and the same was also confirmed by the secretary of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) Mohan de Silva.
Meanwhile, a senior official on the conditions of anonymity said that Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) was not in a position to afford Moody’s fees going ahead and that’s why this decision had to be taken. Reportedly, the Lankan cricket board has savings of over a whopping $40 million.
“We also feel we need a person who is more hands-on, who can spend more time in Sri Lanka,” the source said as quoted by The Daily Star.
Tom Moody’s association with Sri Lanka Cricket
Moody had also served as Sri Lanka’s Head Coach previously and was appointed by SLC as the director of cricket in February last year in order to prepare the team well.
Meanwhile, Moody has not made any comments on qutting his post as of now. It was earlier learned that the 1999 World Cup winner was going to take the director of cricket post with the Desert Vipers franchise in the UAE-based International League T20.
Tom Moody’s exit is indeed a huge setback for the Sri Lankan team as they prepare for the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 qualifiers in order to qualify for the Super 12 stage. Sri Lanka find themselves in Group A alongside Netherlands, Namibia and UAE.
It was under the 56-year-old that the Lankans emerged as the Asia Cup champions few days earlier in the UAE, where they outclassed favourites Pakistan in the final by 23 runs. It now remains to be seen who will succeed Tom Moody as the director of cricket going forward as Sri Lanka strive to regain their lost supremacy.
