Sunil Gavaskar returns unused Mumbai plot after 30 years

Former India skipper and expert Sunil Gavaskar has left the ownership of land allotted to him in Mumbai by the state government. According to officials from Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA), the land was given to the veteran player for making a cricket academy. However, no work has been conducted on that land 30 years after the allotment.

It may be noted that the MHADA had requested Gavaskar to return the unused plot, while Housing Minister of Maharashtra, Jitendra Awhad, has previously expressed his concern over the matter. The former Indian skipper has now returned the plot to MHADA.

It may be noted that Gavaskar penned a letter to Maharashtra Chief Minister (CM) Uddhav Thackeray, telling him that he could not set up a cricket academy on the land in Bandra given to him several years ago. Earlier, Gavaskar along with Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar had approached Uddhav Thackeray with a blueprint to construct the academy. However, the plan was never implemented.

Gavaskar is currently involved in IPL 2022 as a panellist

The veteran Gavaskar is currently in a contract with the official broadcast partner of IPL 2022 and he is serving as a panellist and commentator during the games. The senior player is known for his quirky remarks during commentary and gives in-depth information about any particular topic during his panellist job.

Talking about his numbers in the international arena, Gavaskar played 125 Test matches for India in which he amassed a total of 10,122 runs at an excellent average of 51.12. The right-handed batter also stroked 45 fifties and 34 centuries in the longest format of the game.

Talking about his numbers in the 50-over format, the 72-year-old has played 108 matches and stroked 3092 runs at an average of 35.13. However, his strike rate was a little low considering the 50-over format at 62.26. Gavaskar scored 27 half-centuries and one hundred in the white-ball format. The legendary cricketer retired from the game before the concept of T20 cricket arrived in the international arena.
