T20 WC 2021: Associate nation players who impressed the most

The T20 World Cup 2021 is at its business end with the league-stage matches being done and dusted. It has indeed been a fascinating tournament so far as some mind-boggling contest between the ball and the willow was witnessed. After all, what less can you expect when T20 stalwarts from different corners are in action at one stage.

While the tournament was mostly dominated by the players of full-member sides, some associate-team players also left a significant mark. It has to be noted that associate teams don’t often play with prominent teams in bilateral series. Hence, tackling them at tournaments like the T20 World Cup can be a stern task. While most of the associate players couldn’t shine at this level, there were also some stand-out names.

Meanwhile, let’s look at four Associate nation players who impressed during T20 World Cup 2021 –

4) David Wiese – Namibia

Matches – 8, Runs – 227, Batting Average – 45.4 Wickets – 6, Economy Rate – 7.42

Having represented South Africa in the 2016 edition of the gala tournament, David Wiese served Namibia in this year’s tournament. The all-rounder exceeded expectations and delivered with both bat and ball. In eight matches, the dasher scored 227 runs alongside taking six wickets.

3) Richie Berrington – Scotland

Matches – 8, Runs – 177, Batting Average – 29.50, Strike Rate – 128.26

Richie Berrington was Scotland’s stand-out performer in the competition and his numbers narrate the entire story. With the Scottish openers failing consistently, Berrington would often come in a tricky position. The dasher, however, embraced the challenge and played some brilliant knocks. He even scored a half-century against Pakistan’s lethal bowling attack.

2) Ruben Trumpelmann – Namibia

Matches – 8, Wickets – 6, Economy Rate – 7.67

This left-arm pacer from Namibia certainly made the ball talk in the global competition. Be it taking wickets with the new ball or executing yorkers in death overs, Trumpelmann rose to every challenge which came his way. The speedster, in fact, bowled a maiden over to Pakistan’s Mohammad Rizwan, who has been on a roll in this tournament.

1) Josh Davey – Scotland

Matches – 5 Wickets – 9, Economy Rate – 7.02

Another Scotland player to feature in this elite list is Josh Davey. The right-arm pacer brilliantly exploited the UAE tracks and took wickets at regular intervals. His variations and change of pace even troubled multiple players of the prominent teams. Davey’s tally of 9 wickets is also the highest by any associate team bowler in this tournament.
