T20 WC 2021: ENG vs BAN Review – England make it 2 in 2 with 8-wicket win

In the first-ever T20I between England and Bangladesh, it was England who emerged on top with a clinical performance in their second Super 12 match of the ICC T20 World Cup 2021. Their 8-wicket win has propelled the Englishmen atop Group 1. For Bangladesh, it’s their 2nd successive loss.

Moeen shines in Powerplay

Bangladesh’s decision to bat first backfired in a major way, with the England bowlers wrecking havoc right from the get go. Moeen Ali first got rid of both the openers, followed by Chris Woakes’ big scalp of Shakib Al Hasan. It was down to Mushfiqur Rahim and skipper Mahmudullah to consolidate, but even that effort was negated by part-timer Liam Livingstone. A series of cheap dismissals followed, as Bangladesh looked listless with the bat. Tymal Mills finished off with 3 wickets, restricting Bangladesh to 124/9.

A cakewalk for England batsmen

With a meagre target to chase, England openers got off to an easy start. Although they lost Jos Buttler for 18, Jason Roy at the other end went hammer and tongs from the first ball. His explosive 61 included 5 fours and 3 sixes, propelling England’s scoring rate to another level. By the time he was dismissed, they were already at the finish line. England chased down the total inside 15 overs with 8 wickets in hand.

Top performers

Tymal Mills: The left-arm pacer finished with impressive figures of 3/27 in his 4 overs. He was also involved in a run-out that further derailed Bangladesh’s already hapless batting performance.

Jason Roy: Roy smashed his 7th T20I fifty in his 50th T20I appearance and also bagged the Player of the Match award. Rightly so, his knock ensured England went about their chase in a swift manner and also boosted their net run rate.

Achievements/records

  • Mahmudullah became the highest run-getter for Bangladesh in T20Is with 1890 runs, surpassing Shakib Al Hasan (1885 runs)
  • Tymal Mills’ 3/27 are the 3rd best figures for an English left-arm bowler in T20Is

Bangladesh proceed to face the West Indies on October 29, while England will take on Australia on October 30.
