Temba Bavuma to reconsider role after SA’s loss against the Netherlands

Everything was in place for Temba Bavuma-led South Africa to qualify for the semi-finals of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022, just a win from the Netherlands was required to officially confirm the berth. However, in an unfortunate turn of events for the Proteas, the Dutch side stunned the former by handing them a historic loss by 13 runs.

Skipper Temba Bavuma has opined that he will “think about” the captaincy role following the major defeat that has eliminated them from the Super 12 stage. Bavuma’s position in the squad has been a subject of scrutiny for a while thanks to his recent poor form.

“It’s been a tricky time. To be considering that now, a lot of it will be emotional, in terms of my role as captain within the team. It’s something I will think about. I will speak to the relevant people,” said Bavuma after the shock defeat to the Dutch side.

“We have to see who comes in as a coach. Generally, when you have changes like that, they might come in with a different style. They might find a different leader to execute whatever vision or style of play they have. It will be emotional now if I think about all of that,” added the skipper.

Temba Bavuma’s batting woes continue

Meanwhile, skipper Bavuma’s struggle with the willow continued throughout the T20 World Cup. The Proteas skipper has endured a long string of dismal outings in the shortest format, including the series against India away from home prior to the World Cup.

Therefore, many wonder if he should be included in the squad in the shortest format. With the dismal outing down under, South Africa is expected to take some hard calls with the likes of Rilee Rossouw and Reeza Hendricks showing good form. While South Africa make an exit from the tournament, it remains to be seen what actions will be followed regarding the captaincy post in the side.
