The complete list of India’s T20I captains

India have had some memorable outings ever since the inception of T20I cricket and it was not a format that suited the Indian team traditionally. However, the introduction IPL changed the way the Indian team played its game. Here is the list of India’s T20I captains.

MS Dhoni

MS Dhoni had great success while captaining the country and he even led India to maiden T20 World Cup victory in 2007. He captained India in 72 T20 internationals, winning 42 of them while losing 28. He also led India to the finals of the 2014 T20 World Cup and he also has led India in the most number of T20 internationals so far.

Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli took over the captaincy reigns from MS Dhoni in 2017 in limited-overs cricket and he went on to lead India in 50 games in the T20I format. The right hander managed to win 32 games alongside 16 losses and he stepped down from the position after the T20 World Cup 2021.

Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma has been fantastic so far in his early days of captaincy for Indian cricket across formats. The right-hander has won 24 of his 28 games as captain while losing four and he has already proved his credentials as a leader in IPL.

Shikhar Dhawan

Shikhar Dhawan captained India in the limited overs tour to Sri Lanka in 2021 and he could manage just one victory in the three games of his leadership in T20Is. The left-hander has been in fine form in the IPL, but has not been able to replicate that in international T20s.

Suresh Raina

Suresh Raina led India in three T20 internationals winning all of them and maintained a 100 percent record in terms of his captaincy in the format. The left-hander was the first to score a century for India in the T20I format in the 2010 T20 World Cup.

Ajinkya Rahane

Ajinkya Rahane was one of the underrated captains who had a successful captaincy record for India across formats. He captained the country in two T20Is, winning one and losing one, and interestingly, the only loss for him as captain of India came in the T20I format.

Rishabh Pant

Rishabh Pant led India for the first time in T20 internationals recently in the ongoing home series against South Africa and he did not start well as India lost the game. However, he is likely to excel as a leader of India in the future.

Virender Sehwag

Virender Sehwag captained India in the first ever T20 international played by the country in 2006 against South Africa and he managed to win the fixture. The right-hander played an immense part in India’s successful 2007 T20 World Cup winning campaign.
