Three Instances when current/former cricketers clashed on social media

Michael Vaughan

There have been occasions in the history of the ‘Gentleman’s Game’ where cricketers have not been so gentle with each other. And, after the advent of social media, the fights have turned virtual, with cricketers posting comments against each other on several popular social media platforms.

In this article, let us take a look at 3 instances where cricketers targeted each other on social media.

3. Sreesanth vs Aakash Chopra

It is a known fact that Sreesanth was involved in the spot-fixing scandal that rocked the Indian Premier League (IPL) in the year 2013. Since then, the pacer has not played even a single match for India. And when one of the Twitter users asked Aakash Chopra whether Sreesanth should return to the Indian side again, Chopra said No.

Chopra had further added that Sreesanth had put the sport itself at stake, and he should not play for India. To that, Sreesanth hit back at Chopra and accused him of being ‘two-faced’. Not one to hold back, Chopra replied stating that he would have said the same thing even if his own brother had been involved in spot-fixing.

2. Sanjay Manjrekar vs Michael Vaughan

Sanjay Manjrekar and Michael Vaughan were involved in a Twitter exchange that saw Manjrekar blocking Vaughan on Twitter. It is a known fact that Manjrekar had called Ravindra Jadeja a ‘bits and pieces’ cricketer during the 2019 World Cup.

Later, Manjrekar had picked Jadeja in his predicted playing XI for India’s clash against New Zealand in the semi-final. Vaughan pulled Manjrekar’s leg, adding that the Indian commentator had picked the bits and pieces cricketer in the playing XI. Vaughan added more salt to the wounds and tweeted that the bits and pieces cricketer can spin the ball well. This did not sit down well with Manjrekar and he blocked Vaughan on Twitter.

1. Salman Butt vs Michael Vaughan

Michael Vaughan was involved in a social media spat with Salman Butt in May 2021 and the exchange between these two cricketers hogged the limelight. Vaughan had stated that Kane Williamson would have been hailed as the greatest player if he was an Indian and added that no one speaks against Virat Kohli because of his popularity. Pakistan cricketer Salman Butt reacted to it and added that Kohli has scored 70 international hundreds, while Vaughan could not even score a single ODI ton.

The England cricketer reacted strongly and stated that Butt should have had such a clear mind when he was involved in the match-fixing scandal in the year 2010. Butt hit back at Vaughan, and stated that Vaughan is suffering from ‘mental constipation’.
