Women’s T20 Challenge 2020 Final – Trailblazers vs Supernovas Preview

Smriti Mandhana’s Trailblazers and Harmanpreet Kaur’s Supernovas will take on each other at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium in the final of Jio Women’s T20 Challenge 2020. Supernovas lost the first match against Velocity by 5 wickets and one ball to spare. Meanwhile, Trailblazers decimated Velocity to win the match by 9 wickets and 73 balls in hand. In the final match of the group stage where they played each other, Supernovas won the match by 2 runs to seal a place in the final for themselves.

All the teams won one game each. However, the net run rate had a huge role to play in deciding the finalists of the tournament. Trailblazers were first with +2.109, while Supernovas (-0.054) came second knocking out Velocity (-1.869). The one-sided match between Trailblazers and Velocity meant that they would qualify for the finals even if they lost the next game by a considerably huge margin. The schedule of the tournament was heavily criticized, as Velocity could only get about 12 hours to recover from their first match.

Team News:

Trailblazers:

The Trailblazers had failed to qualify for the finals last season on net run rate. However, a massive win against Velocity in their first game gave them the much-needed boost this time around. Deepti Sharma batted extremely well in the last league stage match, scoring 43* off 40 balls, almost taking the Trailblazers home. Dottin also gave a quickfire 27 runs at the top of the order. However, the form of their captain Mandhana continues to be a cause for concern. She managed a scratchy 33, which wasn’t enough to take her team home.

Supernovas:

Defending champions made it to the finals yet again after winning against table-toppers Trailblazers. Chamari Athapaththu opened the batting in the previous match and top-scored with a fiery 67. With contributions from Harmanpreet Kaur (31) and Priya Punia (30), they managed to reach a good total of 146/6 in 20 overs. Radha Yadav did extremely well to defend 9 runs off the final over and take her team to the finals yet again.
