WPL 2023: Bangalore SWOT analysis

Smriti Mandhana

The Royal Challengers Bangalore went all guns blazing at the first-ever WPL auction as they roped in some of the finest international cricketers to their squad to the Women’s Premier League. They got the services of Indian vice-captain Smriti Mandhana for a whopping INR 3.4 crore, making her the most expensive player of the tournament. They almost emptied their purse to form a strong squad.

Let’s analyse Royal Challengers Bangalore’s squad:

STRENGTH

RCB managed to form one of the most powerful lineups in the tournament. Some of the biggest international stars are a part of the side. Their biggest strength will be Smriti Mandhana’s opening prowess and Australian star Ellyse Perry’s all-round brilliance. Alongside that, New Zealand skipper Sophie Devine, England skipper Heather Knight, South Africa’s Dane van Niekerk, and Australia’s pace spearhead Megan Schutt bring in immense experience. India’s in-form Richa Ghosh and Renuka Thakur strengthen RCB’s star-studded squad.

WEAKNESS

One area where RCB will face a setback will be the spin-bowling options. Though they have overseas players for the role, there is no Indian wrist-spinner in their squad. Since all the games are scheduled to be played across two venues in Mumbai, the overseas players will not be able to use the Indian pitches to the best of their advantage, as compared to the home players.

OPPORTUNITY

Being a part of such a star-studded squad is a great opportunity for the young and bussing cricketers who have been added to RCB’s squad. Sharing the field as well as the dressing room with some of the most experienced international players will prove to be beneficial for the uncapped and lesser experienced players like Disha Kasat, Preeti Bose, Shreyanka Patil and many others.

THREAT

Having roped in so many international stars on their side, the expectations from RCB have already risen. While the RCB men’s team has failed to get their hands on the trophy, experts and fans are hoping for the tables to turn and for the women’s team to grab the inaugural WPL title. They have a squad that can take the team to a championship victory, but due to the expectations, the pressure to do so will be very high.
