WPL 2023: Delhi SWOT Analysis

The first-ever Women’s Premier League auction went really well for all five franchises as they built up robust squads for the inaugural edition of the tournament. There were cases where the teams could not get the services of the players whom they wanted in their scored but never the less every team managed to assemble a strong bunch. Like every other team, Delhi Capitals too had a good outing at the auction as they managed to put together a balanced squad with a mix of experienced and new players.

Let’s analyse Delhi Capitals’ Squad:

STRENGTH

Delhi Capitals will have a strong top-order batting line-up as they will have the explosive Shafali Verma, Jemimah Rodrigues and Australian skipper Meg Lanning on their side. Their middle-order will also be strong as England’s Alice Capsey and South Africa’s Marizanne Kapp join them. Thus, DC will be able to curate a strong playing combination. Their bowling line-up also comprises some experienced players, making them a formidable side.

WEAKNESS

While Delhi managed to build a good team, they still have one loophole as they will lakh a power-hitting wicket keeper-batter. They have two wicket-keeping options on their side in Taniya Bhatia and Aparna Mondal, but none of them bring in the attacking style of play while batting in the middle-order, which will be a matter of concern.

OPPORTUNITY

The Australian national team has seen immense success, especially under Meg Lanning’s captaincy. The prolific batter has led the Australian side to three T20 World Cup victories, one ODI World Cup victory, and a gold medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. It will be a big opportunity for each player on the side to play with and learn from such a successful international captain, who also has the potential to lead Delhi Capitals. The franchise also became the only team to sign a player from the associate nation which gives them the advantage to field five overseas players, including the associate nation player in their playing combination.

THREAT

Delhi Capitals lack depth in their bowling unit. Though they have some fine spinners, their squad majorly sees medium pacers and thus there is a lack of a proper fast bowler. While Shikha Pandey can be given the new ball, there will be doubts over the second pace option for the powerplay.
