WPL 2023: Top 3 wicket-takers

If batters help you win matches, bowlers help in winning tournaments – this age-old saying in cricket has once again come true in the recently concluded Women’s Premier League. Notably, Mumbai Indians, who won the championship in the inaugural season, were splendid with the ball as four of the five top wicket-takers in the tournament belong to the Harmanpreet Kaur-led team.

Thus, needless to say, the champions enjoyed a great time in the middle with the ball. However, who are these cricketers who were consistent throughout with the ball and lit up the tournament? Let’s find out the top three wicket-takers of WPL 2023:

3. Issy Wong

The 20-year-old England international was sensational throughout the course of the season. Even on the night of the finals, Wong picked up three crucial wickets of Shafali Verma, Alice Capsey and Jemimah Rodrigues to decimate Delhi’s batting unit. Overall, the pacer bagged 15 wickets from ten matches and finished as the third-leading wicket-taker of the tournament.

2. Sophie Ecclestone

The No. 1 ranked T20I bowler of the world conquered WPL as well. The spinner was UP Warriorz’s main strength with the ball and the 23-year-old proved why she is so dangerous in the shortest format of the game. Overall, the England international picked up 16 wickets in nine matches and finished as the second-leading wicket-taker of the tournament.

1. Hayley Matthews

Coming to Hayley Matthews, the West Indies international took 16 wickets to her name as well. However, she maintained a better economic rate than Ecclestone. Notably, she has helped Mumbai win multiple matches with the ball throughout the season and on the night of the finals, she once again rose to the occasion, picking up three wickets and conceding only five runs.
