WPL 2023: UP Warriorz SWOT Analysis

At the recently concluded Women’s Premier League auction, five franchises roped in some of the top-tier players of the international arena and built a strong squad for the inaugural edition of the tournament. UP Warriorz was one team that took time to get going but managed to accumulate a good bunch of players in the end.

Let’s analyse UP Warriorz’s squad:

STRENGTH

Warriorz played on the backfoot at the auction but managed to put together a balanced squad for the first-ever WPL. Their team includes India’s finest all-rounder Deepti Sharma and Australian stars Alyssa Healy and Tahlia McGrath, as well as England’s Sophie Ecclestone. With the inclusion of U-19 star Shweta Sehrawat, they strengthened their squad to the core. The experienced players on the side will have the responsibility to take the team to success.

WEAKNESS

UP Warriorz’s squad has a strong top and middle order, but their lower-middle order lacks depth. They will miss a finisher in their squad. Deepti Sharma has played the role well for the Indian side, but she still bats in the middle-order. The team needs a player to anchor the innings in case of a batting collapse.

OPPORTUNITY

The team has three top players from India’s championship-winning U-19 squad. They are Shweta Sehrawat, Parshavi Chopra, and S Yashasri. Shweta and Parshavi were among the top performers for India, playing a key role in the team’s historic victory. The WPL presents a big opportunity for these young stars to make their way to the senior Indian side.

THREAT

Given the number of experienced players in the squad, one big issue that UP Warriorz will face will be giving opportunities to youngsters. Players like Kiran Navgire, Laxmi Yadav, and Simran Shaikh might be sidelined so as to field the strongest XI as all teams will be aiming to get the silverware in the inaugural season.
