WPL Auction 2023: Complete list of Sold & Unsold players
The highly-anticipated auction of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2023 got underway on Monday, February 13, in Mumbai. The auction saw all of the five franchises finalizing their squads ahead of the inaugural season of the WPL.
Having witnessed the glitz and glamour of the event filled with drama and action off the field, teams have done a fair job in order to bolster their squads for the upcoming season. Right from the word ‘go’ by the auctioneer, franchises began to lock horns for certain players that sparked off bidding battles on numerous occasions.
WPL Auction: Squads of all 5 team
As many as 409 players were up for grabs in the bidding arena of which 246 Indians were part of the auction, whereas 163 players were from the overseas nations, which included eight players that belong to the associate nations. The auction saw franchises spulrging a total of INR 59.5 crore for a total of 87 players that went sold.
The event unfurled with Smriti Mandhana getting signed by Royal Challengers Bangalore for a whopping price tag of INR 3.40 crore, which was also the most expensive pick in the auction. Meanwhile, Australia all-rounders, Ashleigh Gardner, and Natalie Sciver, became the joint second most expensive signings after Gujarat Giants and Mumbai Indians secured their services for a mammoth INR 3.20 crore.
India U19 World Cup winning skipper, Shafali Verma will play for the Delhi Capitals as she was brought in for INR 2.00 crore, making her the second most expensive in their sqaud after Jemimah Rodrigues. While a few players immediately garnered attention and sparked off a bidding war, many other high-profile cricketers failed to draw much attention despite their extensive experience and impressive accomplishments. Notable players such as Suzie Bates, Alana King, and Kim Garth among others failed to attract any interest from the franchises.
Needless to say, fans have been thoroughly entertained with what transpired in the bidding arena on Monday. With players from around the world collaborating together for a common goal, it will be interesting to see how matters unfold in the lucrative T20 league.
