Youngest batters to complete 10K Test runs

Former England skipper Joe Root became the latest member in the elite list of the 10000-run club in Test cricket. He achieved this feat in the recently-concluded first Test match against New Zealand at the Home of cricket Lord’s on June 5.

While Root became only the second English batter to register the 10000 club, it is to be noted that he is also the joint-youngest player along with his predecessor Alastair Cook to achieve the milestone. However, there are others who etched their names in history books being the youngest batters and without further ado, here’s a look at three of them.

3. Sachin Tendulkar

Sachin Tendulkar needs no introduction. The batting legend has a plethora of batting records in the world and also features on this elite list as well. While he does not top the charts, the ‘Master Blaster’ finds himself at the third position. He went on to register 10000 Test match runs aged 31 years and 326 days. Tendulkar achieved this record in 195 innings during a Test match against Pakistan on March 16, 2005. He finished his 24-year illustrious career with 15921 Test runs.

2. Alastair Cook

Sir Alastair Cook is England’s highest-scorer in Test cricket and was an accomplished red-ball batter for the Three Lions in his 12-year illustrious international career that saw him made some great batting records. Cook went on to complete 10000 Test runs aged 31 years and 157 days. The Gloucester cricketer achieved this feat during a home Test match against Sri Lanka in May 2016 at Chester-le-Street. He finished his Test career in September 2018 with 12472 runs.

  1. Joe Root

Joe Root has been consistent in red-ball cricket in the last 16 months and seems to be scoring runs for fun in this format. He made sure to achieve this special milestone at the ‘Mecca’ of cricket Lord’s where he went on to complete 10000 runs aged 31 years and 157 days on Day 5 of the first Test against Black Caps. The former Test skipper achieved this feat in just his 118th match.
