Aiden Markram appointed South Africa T20I skipper

Cricket South Africa (CSA) have appointed Aiden Markram as their T20I skipper. Markram takes over the leadership duties in the shortest format from Temba Bavuma, who relinquished the role following the group-stage exits in the last two T20 World Cups.

In addition to this, the apex board has roped in the services of JP Duminy as the batting coach and Rory Kleinveldt as the bowling coach in the white-ball set-up. Notably, Duminy will be with the side on a permanent basis, whereas Kleinveldt will be part of the set-up only for the forthcoming West Indies series.

“I would like to congratulate Aiden on his appointment as captain of the Proteas T20I team. Leadership is extremely familiar to him having successfully led on so many levels. He is a player that inspires confidence and he has all the qualities to succeed in the role. We have no doubt will help take South Africa to the next level,” Director of cricket Enoch Nkwe said in a release.

“At the same time, we would like to thank Temba (Bavuma) for filling the position so aptly over the past two years. He has done a commendable job during this period and now has a new role to fulfil within the national set-up,” he added.

Markram recently tasted some success as he led the Sunrisers Eastern Cape to win the inaugural edition of the SA20. In 2014, he led the U19 team to a title win at the U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup. With those achievements behind his back, he would be gunning to succeed with the senior set-up.
