CWC 2019: PAK vs BAN Records – Babar’s 96 and Mustafizur’s 100

Pakistan defeated Bangladesh by 94 runs in their last group game of the 2019 World Cup. The losing margin was around 200 runs less than what Pakistan needed to qualify for the semi-finals. Nevertheless, they will return home as the fifth-ranked side of the tournament. Bangladesh was gallant in the loss and their superstar Shakib Al Hasan once again showed why he is their greatest cricketer ever.

Both teams will not take further part in the competition but they did etch a few records before bowing out. Here are the most important ones –

Babar Azam overtakes Javed Miandad

Pakistan’s best batsman in the current setup, Babar Azam, played another scintillating knock in Pakistan’s final game. After being dropped twice, Azam was on the way to make another three-figure score. He was trapped in front of the stumps on 96. The batsman signed off the tournament with 474 runs in eight matches. This is now the highest by a Pakistani batsman leaving behind Javed Miandad’s tally of 437 runs scored in the 1992 World Cup.

Imam-ul-Haq races to his 7th ODI century

Pakistani opener, Imam-ul-Haq, outscored Azam and completed his seventh ODI century in just 99 balls. The bespectacled batsman brought up this milestone in his 36th innings. He is the second-fastest cricketer to the seventh ODI ton after Azam. Imam also became Pakistan’s youngest World Cup centurion at 23 years 206 days.

Mustafizur completes his 100 ODI wickets

The left-arm pace bowler, Mustafizur Rehman, picked his 100th ODI wicket during the course of his five-for. The ‘Fizz’ has completed the milestone in just 54 ODIs. Overall, he is the fourth-fastest to reach there and the fastest for Bangladesh. He also became the third bowler after Gary Gilmour (AUS) and Ashantha de Mel (SL) to take two consecutive five-fors in the World Cup.

Shaheen shines at the Lord’s

At the age of 19 years and 90 days, Shaheen Afridi became the youngest bowler to take a five-wicket haul in the World Cup. His bowling figures of 6/35 are the best bowling figures for Pakistan in the World Cup. Previous best also belonged to an Afridi. Shahid Afridi had taken 5 for 16 against Kenya in the 2011 World Cup.

Shakib ends in elite company

Shakib Al Hasan continued his sterling form and scored his seventh half-century of the tournament. The all-rounder has scored 606 runs in the 2019 World Cup. Only Sachin Tendulkar (2003) and Matthew Hayden (2007) had scored in excess of 600 runs in the World Cup previously.
