ENG vs IND: 3rd T20I Review – England overcome gutsy Suryakumar

England beat India by 17 runs in Trent Bridge, Nottingham on July 10, Sunday. However, Rohit Sharma’s side clinched the series as they won the first two games, and finished with a lead of 2-1. This was also England’s first series under the captaincy of Jos Buttler.

Buttler won the toss and elected to bat first. The skipper walked in with Jason Roy to open the innings. The hosts scored 52 runs during the powerplay for the loss of one wicket, as Buttler was dismissed in the fourth over for 18 by pacer Avesh Khan. The middle phase of the innings, with Dawid Malan and Liam Livingstone on the crease, was the defining period for England as they put up 84 runs for the fourth wicket. The finishing touch was given by Livingstone with an unbeaten 42 off 29 balls.

India, with a huge target of 216, started off slowly as India lost their top three early after having only 31 runs on board in five overs. Rohit departed for 11, Rishabh Pant for 1 and Virat Kohli for 11, and then came the 129-run stand for the fourth wicket between Suryakumar Yadav and Shreyas Iyer, taking India to 150 for four wickets after 15.1 overs. However, In the end, India were kept to198 following some regular strikes by England bowlers in the backend of India’s chase.

Top Performers of the match

Dawid Malan

Malan walked in at number three with England on 31 for the loss of one wicket after 3.4 overs. He scored an explosive 77 runs off 39 balls, which had six fours and five sixes, and left when the team was on 168 for the loss of four wickets after 16.3 overs. He finished as the top scorer, and also set the tempo of the England innings, adding runs for the fourth wicket along with Livingstone, and helping them set up a huge total of 215.

Suryakumar Yadav

Yadav arrived at number four when the chips were down for India, as they were on 13 for the loss of two wickets after 2.4 overs. India were in need of a big contribution from the middle order batters as well as a big partnership. And then came Yadav with a spectacular 117off 55balls, with 14fours and 6sixes. He also became only the fifth Indian batter to score a hundred in T20Is.
