Here’s what happened in the only T20 edition of Asia Cup

The 2022 T20 Asia Cup is slated to start on August 27, 2022, with Sri Lanka taking on Afghanistan in the opening encounter. Asia Cup is usually played in a 50-over format but just like this year, the first ever T20 Asia Cup was played in 2016 with Bangladesh hosting the event.

A total of five teams participated in the tournament including the hosts Bangladesh, defending champions Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, and United Arab Emirates (UAE). To note UAE got qualified for the main competition after they came out victorious in the qualifying stage which included Afghanistan, Hong Kong, and Oman.

As many as 11 encounters took place in the tournament and all of them were played at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka. The Men in Blue had an excellent outing in the group stage matches as they topped the table after defeating all four other participating countries.

The home team Bangladesh finished in second place after losing just one match against India. Both Pakistan and Sri Lanka had an average season as Pakistan won two and Sri Lanka could only manage to win one encounter in their four matches. UAE lost all of its four fixtures.

The final match of the tournament was played between the home team Bangladesh and India. The final match was cut down to a 15-over per side game due to rain with India comfortably winning the match by eight wickets as opener Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli played a major role with the bat.

Bangladesh batter Sabbir Rahman was the highest run-getter with 176 runs in five matches. Sri Lanka senior batter Dinesh Chandimal stroked the most number of fifties (two) in four matches. while Bangladesh pacer  Al- Amin Hossain ended up as the leading wicket-taker with 11 wickets in five matches.
