How Kanpur crowd got behind Shreyas Iyer during the 1st Test

Shreyas Iyer

Shreyas Iyer was the toast of the Indian cricket team on 26th November 2021. The right-handed batsman scored a century on debut against the Kiwis and helped India post a total of 345 on the board.

In his innings that lasted 171 deliveries, Iyer scored a mellifluous 105. The right-hander scored 13 fours and 2 sixes in his knock and thwarted the opposition bowlers. And, the crowd at Kanpur where the 1st Test match is being played got behind Iyer.

A section of the crowd can be seen cheering on for Iyer in their own unique way. The crowd was seen chanting the lines ‘10 rupaye ki pepsi, Iyer bhai sexy’. You can see the video of the same below.

New Zealand produces a strong response in reply

The New Zealand side produced a superb response with the bat. The Kiwi openers put on a century partnership, and at the time of writing, the New Zealand scorecard reads 116/0 after 46 overs. Both the Black Caps’ openers, Tom Latham and Will Young thwarted the Indian bowling attack. New Zealand currently trials India by 229 runs.

Earlier in the day, New Zealand wrapped up the Indian innings just after lunch. Apart from Iyer who completed his century, Ravichandran Ashwin also chipped in with a handy 38 off 56 deliveries lower down the order on Day 2. The likes of Axar Patel, Wriddhiman Saha, and Ishant Sharma were dismissed for single-digit scores.

Tim Southee cleaned up the Indian batting lineup on Day 2. The right-arm pacer scalped a five-wicket haul, as the Indian lower order was rendered clueless by the bowling great. Apart from Southee, tall Kiwi pacer Kyle Jamieson picked up 3 wickets, while left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel dismissed 2 willow wielders.
