Earlier, India were bowled out for a total of 345 runs, with Shreyas Iyer scoring a ton. On that note, let us take a look at the 3 talking points of Day 2 of the 1st Test between India and New Zealand.

3. New Zealand openers put on a century stand

The New Zealand openers thwarted the Indian bowling attack on Day 2. Tom Latham and Will Young played out a whopping 57 overs and remained undefeated. The duo put on a superb partnership of 129 runs for the opening wicket, as the Indian bowlers were unable to breach through the defences of the duo.

While Young scored a mellifluous 75* off 180 deliveries, Latham scored a 165-ball 50*. Even though the two batsmen faced some anxious moments out in the middle, they displayed remarkable determination and hung on.

2. Tim Southee scalps a five-wicket haul

Tim Southee was outstanding with the ball on Day 2. The right-arm pace bowling veteran had scalped the wicket of Cheteshwar Pujara on Day 1 and gobbled up 4 Indian batsmen on Day 2. While Ravindra Jadeja was cleaned up by Southee, Wriddhiman Saha edged the right arm pacer behind the stumps to gift Southee his third wicket.

Southee then scalped the big wicket of Shreyas Iyer and completed his fifer by picking up the wicket of left-hander Axar Patel. Southee’s five-wicket haul helped New Zealand restrict India to a total of under 350.
