IPL: Most runs by No 4 batter

Rohit Sharma

The Indian Premier League has seen several top batters over the years who have put on remarkable performances for their teams time and again. The league has been dominated by some of the biggest batters in international cricket who have ripped apart numerous bowling attacks on many occasions in their career. While openers get to play with fielding restrictions in the first six overs, they somehow get out early trying to take the attack on the opposition right from the word go.

In such a case, the pressure turns to middle-order players to stabilise the innings after the early wickets and take their team to a safe total. Hence, batting at no. 4 requires a good mixture of attack and defence as per the requirement of the team. On that note, let’s take a look at the top three batters who have the most runs to their names batting at no 4:

3. Rishabh Pant (1740 runs)

The wicketkeeper-batter is out of action from the ongoing season as he met a near-fatal accident in December 2022. However, Pant has etched his name in the IPL record books with his marvellous performances in his six-year-long career in the tournament. Pant’s best-ever IPL performance came in 2018 when he scored 684 runs at an average of 52.61 and a strike rate of 173.60. The 25-year-old has 1740 runs to his name batting at no. 4 and is the third-highest run-scorer at this batting position.

2. AB de Villiers (1956 runs)

Mr. 360 is one of the greatest batters to ever grace the field in IPL as he is the sixth-highest run-getter in the history of the tournament with 5162 runs to his name at an average of 39.70 and a strike rate of 151.68 (highest for players with over 3000 runs). De Villiers’ best-ever performance came in the year 2016 as he scored 687 runs at an average of 52.84 and a strike rate of 168.79.

The swashbuckling batter has bailed RCB out of trouble several times in his career by playing numerous memorable knocks. He has scored 1956 runs at no. 4 positions and is the second-highest run-scorer at the batting position.

1. Rohit Sharma (2392 runs)

The most successful captain of the IPL has been having quiet seasons in the tournament for some time. However, his incredible past record makes him rank in the fourth position in the list of highest run-scorers of the tournament with 5880 runs to his name. Rohit has played several memorable knocks for Mumbai during his successful journey leading the side to five title victories. He has scored 2392 runs at No. 4 and is the highest run-scorer at the batting position.
