Most Test double tons amongst active cricketers

Red ball cricket has often been the benchmark for evaluating the temperament of the players. With the emergence of T20 cricket, it has been essential for players to showcase their mettle in the longest format of the game. Among the current crop of players, only four players have managed to breach the 200-run mark on four occasions. On that note, we list the current players with the most double centuries to their names.

Steve Smith (Australia) – 4

Former Australian skipper Steve Smith is arguably the best batter in the longest format of the game, averaging an astonishing 60.58 for the Australian team. The batting ace made some minor tweaks in his technique ahead of the series against the West Indies and was rewarded instantly, as he added to his tally of double centuries in the first innings of the Perth Test.

Joe Root (England) – 5

Averaging just a shade under 50 in red-ball cricket, Joe Root is arguably England’s greatest-ever Test cricketer. The middle-order bulwark has been a constant presence for the Three Lions ever since making his debut in 2012. He has five double centuries to his name, with his last double ton coming against India in 2021.

Kane Williamson (New Zealand) – 5

One of the most lovable cricketing figures around the globe, Kane Williamson’s batting is a joy to watch for the purists. The Kiwi often leads from the front for his side, despite relinquishing his leadership role last month. He was at his classical best in the first Test against Pakistan in Karachi, registering the fifth double ton of his career.

Virat Kohli (India) – 7

It is not a surprise at all Virat Kohli reigns supreme in this illustrious list. The Indian batting superstar has not had the greatest time in the longest format of the year in the past couple of years, but he still boasts an imperious record in red-ball cricket. The 34-year-old has seven double centuries to his name, the most by any current player and the fourth-most overall behind Don Bradman, Kumar Sangakkara and Brian Lara.
