Only two Indian spinners to take World Cup five-wicket hauls

The ODI World Cup has seen many excellent individual performances over the years. Many teams like Australia, England, New Zealand, India, and many more have possessed exceptional talents in their squads that have made significant contributions to their sides in the tournament.

The Indian team has been one of the more dominant sides in the ODI World Cups over the years. Talking of the side’s bowling performances, team India has had some of the formidable bowling attacks in several editions of the tournament, and over the years, there have only been two spinners who have taken a fifer for the Men in Blue in the ODI World Cups.

2) Yuvraj Singh (IND vs IRE, 2011)

Former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh was the first Indian spinner who took a fifer in the ODI World Cup for India. Yuvraj achieved the feat in the 22nd game of the ODI World Cup 2011 when India took on Ireland at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. Batting first, Ireland were restricted to a total of 207 runs in the first innings, star all-rounder Yuvraj Singh was the highest wicket-taker, bowling 10 overs, Yuvraj took five wickets and conceded just 31 runs in the process. Eventually, he scored an unbeaten 50 runs to chase the target for India as well, winning them the game by five wickets.

1) Ravindra Jadeja (IND vs SA, 2023)

Ace all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja became the latest spinner to take a fifer for India. The 34-year-old achieved the feat when India took on South Africa in the 37th game of the ODI World Cup 2023. Batting first, India posted a total of 326 runs on the board, and aiming to defend the total, the Men in Blue put in one of the best bowling performances of the tournament. Bundling out the Proteas on a total of 83 runs, Ravindra Jadeja was the highest wicket-taker. Taking five wickets, the 34-year-old conceded 33 runs in the nine overs he bowled as India won the game by 243 runs.
