PBKS vs MI Review: Suryakumar, Bumrah’s stellar performance propelled Mumbai to their third win

Punjab Kings took on Mumbai Indians in Match 33 of the Indian Premier League 2024 at the MYSIC Stadium in Mohali on Thursday. PBKS won the toss and opted to bowl first. Ishan Kishan (8 off 8) departed early before Rohit Sharma (36 off 25) and Suryakumar Yadav (78 off 53) paired up for an 81-run stand for the second wicket. Tilak Verma (34* off 18) stuck to his crease while Hardik Pandya (10 off 6) and Tim David (14 off 7) played little cameos at the end as MI posted a considerable 192/7 on board.

Chasing the target, a tweaked PBKS opening pair of Sam Curran (6 off 7) and Prabhsimran Singh (0 off 1) faltered while Riley Russow (1 off 3) and Liam Livingstone (1 off 2) could not help. Harpreet Singh (13 off 15) and Jitesh Sharma (9 off 9) lacked intent but Shashank Singh (41 off 25) and Ashutosh Sharma (61 off 28) raised PBKS’ hopes with their striking. Harpreet Brar could not hang around till the end (21 off 20) as MI eventually won the game by nine runs.

Top Performers of the Match

Surayakumar Yadav (78 off 53)

Suryakumar Yadav came all guns blazing at number two. He stitched a much-needed partnership with Rohit and laid the foundation for MI’s search for a formidable target. He smashed seven boundaries and three sixes and ended with a strike rate of 147.147.

Jasprit Bumrah (3 for 21)

Jasprit Bumrah started the downfall of the PBKS batting lineup. He cleaned up Russow who was playing his first game of IPL 2024. He then sent Curran packing. He was brought back into the attack in the 13th over and broke the budding partnership by picking Shashank Singh.

What’s next for both teams?

Punjab Kings will host Gujarat Titans in Match 37 at the MYSIC Stadium in Mohali on April 21 while Mumbai Indians will take on Rajasthan Royals in Match 38 at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur on April 22.
