R Ashwin wins BCCI Special Award

On February 1, 2025, at the BCCI Naman Awards held in Mumbai, legendary Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was honored with the BCCI Special Award, recognizing his outstanding contributions to Indian cricket. Ashwin, who recently announced his retirement from international cricket, concluded his illustrious career as India’s second-highest wicket-taker, amassing 765 wickets across all formats. In addition to his bowling prowess, he scored 4,394 runs, including six centuries and 14 fifties.
During the event, renowned cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle engaged Ashwin in a conversation about his post-retirement life and how his family has been adjusting to his increased presence at home. In his characteristic humorous style, Ashwin quipped, “They just kicked me out, they’ve had enough of me already. Look, I’ve never been home for this stretch together. I have dropped children before, but dropping and picking up them and also being part of their daily routine is something I didn’t sign up for. But, I must admit I am enjoying quite a bit.”
Reflecting on his illustrious career, Ashwin expressed gratitude for realizing his dream of playing alongside cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar. He also highlighted the strong bonds he formed with teammates, especially in the latter stages of his career, emphasizing the camaraderie and shared experiences that enriched his journey in international cricket.
The BCCI Naman Awards celebrate exceptional performances and contributions to Indian cricket. Ashwin’s recognition with the Special Award underscores his significant impact on the sport and his enduring legacy as one of India’s premier spin bowlers. His achievements have left an indelible mark on cricket history, inspiring future generations of cricketers.
