India’s mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy got his debut T20I cap during India’s 1st T20I against Sri Lanka in Colombo. Earlier, Chakravarthy got a few call-ups but couldn’t be part of the team due to injury and fitness concerns. However, he got in rightful chance in Sri Lanka and had a decent outing in the debut match where he picked one picked after conceding 28 runs in his quota of four overs.

In the same light, former Indian cricketer and commentator VVS Laxman lavished praise on debutant Chakravarthy. He added that the mystery spinner has a lot of variations under his belt and can bring breakthroughs for the team whenever a partnership has to be disturbed. If India wants him to shine further, he should be dealt with patiently and given chances in the future too.

Firstly, I am glad that he (Varun Chakravarthy) got this opportunity because twice he was already selected, but didn’t p the fitness test and was not part of the squad. I think there’s a lot of chat about the mystery surrounding his bowling. I was talking with the Sunrisers batsman and they are all impressed with the way and the consistency with which he bowls in different parts and phases of the match. He can bowl with the new ball, he can come and take wickets whenever the captain and the teams want to break a partnership – that means he’s got an X-factor.

VVS Laxman opens up on having belief in players

And we just want him to get exposure of international cricket and the only way he can do that is by making him play. So, I’m sure that he is really looking forward to this opportunity, but one thing which we have realized over years is to make sure you give him the opportunity. Don’t expect miracles from game one. It is very important to show patience and belief in a player,” said Laxman on STAR SPORTS SHOW GAME PLAN.

Chakravarthy was bowling fine before he bagged his first maiden international wicket which came up with the help of Ishan Kishan. The spinner sent back SL skipper Dasun Shanaka while placing a carrom ball which the batsman failed to judge and Kishan effected an outstanding stumping.
