We are definitely going to see a lot more of Varun Chakravarthy in international cricket: Eoin Morgan

Kolkata Knight Riders’ captain Eoin Morgan lauded Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy after KKR’s thumping seven-wicket win over Mumbai Indians on Thursday, September 23 at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. Narine became the Player of the Match after he bowled at an economy rate of five with 10 dot balls and also picked up the crucial wicket of MI skipper Rohit Sharma.

Chakravarthy couldn’t pick up a wicket, but kept the MI batters quiet as he gave away 22 runs in four overs. The 35-year-old Morgan reckoned that Chakravarthy has a long way to travel and backed him to play loads of international cricket in the future. After the Knight Riders won their second game in the UAE leg, the skipper lauded the tweaker for being a “quick learner”.

Varun likes to know about the game, says Eoin Morgan

“Sunil and Varun are formidable bowlers. Sunil has been integral in winning KKR championships in the past. Varun is a fresh guy and I’m sure we are definitely going to see a lot more of him in international cricket. The first two games in this second phase have been a great template for us to play. There’s only one way for us to go in the points table, and that’s up,” Morgan said in the post-match presentation ceremony.

“Varun likes to know about the game and asks a lot of questions. He’s a quick learner, someone who likes to know about cricket, and has far to go,” he added.

The 30-year-old Varun is currently the joint second-highest wicket-taker for the Knight Riders in the 2021 edition of the IPL along with speedster Andre Russell. In nine games, the Tamil Nadu-born has picked up 10 wickets at an impressive economy rate of 7.05.

He also bagged the Player of the Match award in KKR’s match against Royal Challengers Bangalore on Monday, September 20 at the same venue. In that game, he picked up the three wickets of Glenn Maxwell, Sachin Baby and Wanindu Hasaranga.

Moreover, he bowled at an economy of 3.25 in his four-over spell. Chakravarthy made his T20I debut on India’s tour of Sri Lanka two months ago and picked up two wickets from three games.
